Gilboa quarry
I dove this location in October and thought it was a nice place to dive but have read some bad things about it (4 deaths in 07) but the problems seem to have all been diver error or illness. Any thoughts? Gilboa Quarry Scuba Diving

re: Gilboa
I did my AOW dives at Gilboa and have been there a number of times. I missed a Gilboa trip this year due to some sinus surgery but plan to visit Gilboa, Portage and Whitestar quarries next year. Gilboa is usually a great place to dive. The visibility is good if the OW students haven't stirred it up too much. There is plenty to see including a jet aircraft to go through, a helicopter, school bus, boats, etc. The fish are plentiful and very friendly - downright aggressive near the bus. The shallow side is anywhere from 20 to 65' deep with great decks and stairs to get in and out. There are also some good training platforms at 20'. Last I heard a dive plan must be approved by management to dive the deep side. It is deep and cold. There is a platform at about 70' near the shore entrance to the deep side. There has been exhaustive discussion as to the deaths and injuries on the Scuba Board and I won't repeat it here. I believe it is a very safe place to dive if you stay within your training and equipment. The only downsides I see are that it is somewhat expensive to dive there and it can be very crowded on the weekends. I've had great experiences at Gilboa, Portage, and Whitestar.

I've been to Gilboa and Whitestar on several occasions. I like Gilboa because of the diving. There is lots to see without having to swim very far. It is very easy to get into and out of the water. There are always people around so there is a nice social atmosphere around all the time. Also, they have running water, air fills most days, and heated bathrooms.
However, Whitestar is warmer (at 45 feet at least), usually has better vis and I prefer it for just a quick jump in the water and some leisurely diving. But, part of that is because it's cheaper, less crowed and closer to my home. |

Note disclaimer-I have not dove gilboa, but have heard good things about it.
With regards to the 4 deaths, from what I have heard the deaths were all due to diver error. In most cases it was either a medical issue or gear issue. It happens folks did not dive within their training and paid for it. I'd dive there if and when I can. |

Love diving Gilboa BUT
I love the diving at Gilboa, but they want to nickel and dime you to death. The last time there we stayed in the apartment above the shower house not cheap ($125.00 a night) we didn't get in until about 11:00 pm and the next morning we went into the dive shop to pay for everything and not only did the charge us for the room but also a entrance fee for being on the grounds that night. Then they charge you to drive you car back into the campground to drop off equipment. Not bad diving for Ohio but not sure it's worth the money.
