Club members are going to check out the diving at Grove Lake Wildlife Management Area the weekend of August 7-8. Grove Lake is located 2 miles north of Royal, NE in Antelope County. It is close to Ashfall Fossil Beds State Historical Park: Ashfall Visitor Information.
We will camp at Niobrara State Park, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission - Parks - Area Search, which is approximately 35 miles away from Grove Lake. A state park permit is required at both Niobrara State Park and Ashfall. There is an entrance fee of $5.00 per adult, $3.00 per child 6 and older, and ages 5 and under are free at Ashfall. Tentative plans are to visit Ashfall Saturday morning, dive at Grove Lake Saturday afternoon, and attend a Buffalo Cookout at Niobrara State Park on Saturday evening. Several club members plan to drive to Niobrara State Park on Friday, August 6 and camp for 2 nights.
Sunday would be free to do more diving at Grove Lake, or participate in other activities offered at Niobrara State Park which include horseback riding, hiking on the trails, or going to the pool. Fees are listed here: Nebraska Game and Parks Commission - Parks - Permits
Here is some additional information about the Buffalo Cookout: It is all you can eat, with a cost of $9 for adults and $6 for children. The meal is all you can eat buffalo burgers, salads and baked beans, iced tea or lemonade and ice cream for desert. Reservations must be made at the office no later than noon on that Saturday. The cookout starts at 6pm and the entertainment starts by 6:45pm. Stay for a great program about Native Americans. Watch the Ponca Warrior Society dancers perform along with buffalo skinners, story telling and more. The program is free of charge; a park entry permit is required.
