| How do I fix this? This is a place for more technical equipment related questions. How do I stop this free flow, what is the IP of this reg, etc. |

dacor gauge/computer question
I was hoping someone could tell me what this console computer is? I have an Aeris xr2 (4 dives on it), but thought if it wasn't a big hassle to replace the battery,
I would use the console as a back up. Any thoughts? All it says is dacor, and it came with an aqualug conshelf se2 reg set I picked up used. Also is the conshelf se2 a decent reg set to continue with ( I realize that its older, but was told it is a good dependable set-up) Thanks |

The SE-2 is an excellent reg and received the A rating by the USN. It came out in the late 80's as I recall and parts are readilly available for it. It is a basic Conshelf design and well built. At one time the HP seat had a recall about 20 years ago. If it has been overhauled since then it is probably good to go. I would overhaul it before diving it. Some plastic second stage plastic Conshelf regs were recalled due to hairline cracks where the LP hose enters the box of the second stage. Check to make sure yours is not cracked. I am not sure if the SE-2 was affected by this .
The console you have looks like a standard depth guage with max depth needle and a SPG with a compass. It is not a computer as far as I can see. It does have some sort of display on the pressure guage but I am not sure what it is, digital pressure or temp maybe. Yeah, I would use it as it seems like a good solid piece of dive gear. |

thank you
Well its good to hear another positive vote for the reg set. When I bought it I took it to the LDS to have it gone through, at first they said it wasn't worth it, but they'd try and get parts. 100.00 later they told me I was good to go.
I did four dives in jamaica with the set in feb and they seemed as good as any rental unit I've used so far. My next concern is using this set in non-tropical waters, should I be looking for a different set to dive in local waters? thanks |

I see you are in Alberta and I suspect you may want to dive in colder waters. Unless you are diving in water where a reg freeze up is possible I would not worry about it. The only drawback with this first stage is that it only has a few LP ports so if you needed a drysuit hose you would need a splitter to run another hose off the first stage.
If using a drysuit you could also use an Octo+ inflator to free up a LP port. If you ever feel the need to get a better cold water reg you can just get a Conshelf 14 second stage and use it. The all brass second stage makes it a good cold water reg as it is a good heat sink. An environmental kit can also be put on your first stage to make it a very good cold water reg. In this configuration the reg was called the Conshelf Supreme. it is still used by the US navy. I use one a lot and the only free flows I have gotten are when I was filling lift bags. Any US Diver dealer can work on it. It sound a bit steep for a $100 overhaul but prices vary from place to place. Shop around. You may want to learn to overhaul this reg yourself as it is very simple to work on and needs minimal tools. |

I purchased what appears to be that exact console and add-on compass in the late 80's. Used it until the mid-90's with Navy tables or the PADI wheel where appropriate. It is a little heavy, not to mention large given todays technology, but functioned very well. In the mid nineties I added a Genesis computer with hose attachment so the depth gauge and elapsed time digital readout became back-up. I gave the console up in 1999. Still, it was a dependable unit.-chris
Note: If you ever get rid of the console, strip off the compass - take the compass out of the slip on mount, and put it in a wrist mount boot as a back-up piece of equipment. |
