Making my own tank banger.....

I saw someone that had drilled w hole through a golf ball and put some elastoprene through it and around the tank. I didnt get a chance to ask him how he did it but does anyone have a link to a site that allows you to mold and work the material?

Lotta trouble for something so cheap...and unnecessary. Butt of knife works quite nicely. And, when you get your buddy's attention, you can threaten him/her with it for leaving you and not paying attention to you. Buddies stick together!!!

I've never had a need for a tank banger, and they are cheap. But I understand the joy of making your own stuff too. I would recommend using shock-cord to go through the middle of the ball. The cord also allows you to tie a knot at each side, so the ball can't slide around.

my wife thinks that she needs one, but I am a bit apprehensive about getting her one as she may use it on me when I am misbehaving

A couple of years ago I was on a trip with the dive club. One of the newer divers saw someone use a tank banger and thought it was the coolest thing he ever saw. When the boat got back he was in the dive shop making a puchase of a brand new tank banger before he even rinsed his equipment.

The next day, all we heard was his tank banger. He was banging everytime he saw a parrot fish. A few divers politely asked him to clam down, but he was so excited about his new toy that his enthusiasm could not be curbed.

Fortunately, he was a little absent minded and he misplaced his tank banger. Dives were peacefull again... Until the boat got back and he puchased another one.

Fortunately, the next day while suiting up for a dive, he misplaced it again. He seemed suspicious, but I was no where near his equipment, he was really just very very absent minded.

At least that my story, and I'm sticking to it.

You might be the first person I've ever heard of who actually does need one then.

It's funny how those #@&* things are always accidentally falling overboard.

Bungee cord, 3/8" thickness- a circle around the tank with a knot but first thread a galvanized steel plumbing fitting through it, a 3/4" elbow is nice. Assembly and installation left to your own imagination. Cost: $1.80

They rust, but I have never been motivated to find something that doesn't (at that price). Drilling a hole through a golf ball should be left to Jamey & Adam skills. Maybe freeze it first and clamp it real well? The rubber will grab hold of any drill bit and give you a wrist breaking snap.

Upgrade? Then tie some 3mm line thru the fitting, about 18" of it, and put a small snaffle hook to attach it to your BC. This makes it easier to get ahold of and also retains it if the bungee slips off your tank.

As your diving and that of your buddy becomes more advanced, a simple tap of the flashlight to the mask glass or a snap of a carabiner will do.

Anyone that uses a loud signaling device should also consider intentionally going a bit overboard on the "pointing at what was interesting" posture.

A lot of people just make noise and you can't figure out who is making the fuss about what.

I've only used my noise maker a few times. Once during a small emergency I had to use it to get hubby's attention. I was sure glad I had it then.
