regulator service phobia

I’ve had some unpleasant surprises on dives immediately following regulator service by local shops. I am therefore hesitant to subject my regs once again to hammer and chisel. This time, I opted to ship the set to ScubaToys for service. So far, I’m very impressed with their reasonable rates and fast turnaround time. My final and most important evaluation will be after a June dive trip. I’ll report back then.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I have had four regs serviced by ST and I haven't had any problems with any of them when I got them back.

ST does a great job servicing regs and all though I have never had an issue it is always a good idea to test dive a newly serviced reg at a local lake or pool before traveling.......

Yep, had this experience too after relocating. Always important to find a good shop you can trust and stick with them. I think ST is one of those good shops, just wish they were closer. Got no problem shipping stuff if the turnaround is good though.

As stated - Test the regs plenty of time BEFORE the trip. ST's does good work, but they are still only human.

EDIT -

You're up there in N Alabama, so go dive that Madison quarry before your dive trip.

Sent my regs in to ST a few weeks ago. I just went to put them through a workout before my trip and found that at least one of them was messed up. SO now I can't trust the work on any of them. $300 out the window, plus the cost of having them re-worked locally.

I'm not sure I'd write them all of just because of an issue on one, but I definitely see your point. What was the issue?

A common issue for sure.... very sad. I'm actually getting closer to doing it myself. I've even had an issue even with a reliable LDS doing them. Maybe it was a fluke maybe not but it sure doesn't make you easy knowing it's life support equip.

The yoke retaining nut was loose. Loose enough that I could turn it with a finger. So my problem is that if the tech failed to torque down a major component, what small parts were over looked?

I called and talked to a manager, and emailed Larry, but Larry never replied.

Edit to add - apparently the email link I follwed from the profile was not correct for Larry. No fault to him for that.
