Need special tool to unscrew the yoke out?

Hi guys,

i want to convert my yoke reg to din. i've just got the kit from ST.

when i used my adjustable wrench to try to fit onto the yoke screw, my wrench is too small, or is there another way to take the yoke apart?

any advices?

Many want a special yoke nut socket to deal with a yoke nut. But they are most important when it's time to assemble an apply the correct torque. For a one time disassembly, a large adjustable wrench will do the job. But it takes a fairly large (read expensive) one to span the yoke.

A yoke nut socket is basically a regular socket with all the bits cut away that don't fit. Scubapro uses a 1" yoke nut so I took a 3/8th inch drive, 1" socket and shortened it, cut a little around the edge to clear the sides of the yoke, and cut a little off the shoulders so it would fit. Takes about an hour with a dremel tool and cutting wheels. What size yoke nut are you dealing with?

I think I got the pic with this. The one on the left is a 3/8th inch drive. The one on the right is 1/2 inch drive with a 1/4 inch drive adapter for some older yoke with a smaller yoke screw. But you shou7ld get the idea.

What you want is a Yoke Nut Socket about 2/3 down:

There are other ways to remove them but I would not reccomend it. An adjustable wrench will often mar the nut if it slips off which often does cause the nut is so thin. You can try clamping the nut. Best bet is to take into a shop which should have the yoke nut tool.

There is one other option depending on the design of the 1st stage. If it has a body like a balanced piston, you can firmly attach the reg to the tank and turn (unscrew) the body. This will often result in the yoke nut unscrewing from the body. Again, depending on the reg, you are looking at 15 to 24 ft lb of torque (plus any corrosion on the threads) so it might take some effort.

If you don't have adequate tools, it really might be best to let a shop do thye switch. But if you will be switching back and forth, you need to get the right tools.

i'm having a oceanic 1st stage, a fdx10 and cdx5.
which one should i get?

i might be switching back and forth... so, shipping it to ST will not be feasible

thanks.

If you get hands on a real, real big crescent... you should be able to get it off without any damage. Just make sure it's big enough to grab the entire nut on each side.

Probably some auto store will let you borrow one for the 10 seconds it will take.

Why switch back and forth? Once you have the din on it you can just get the din to yoke converter and it just hand screws on anytime you want to use it as a yoke and hand screws off any time you want to use it as a din.
