[Thup Thup Thup] while inhaling

I have used regulators that sometimes go [thup thup thup] when I go to inhale slowly... it is almost like the reg is bouncing on and off.

What is this called, and what does one normally do to fix it?

I am not sure what you mean and of course, it never happened to me. I think it will be a great idea to send it off to the shop to get it serviced, maybe there is an issue internally.

skip breathing... regulator adjusted too tight usually...

when is the last time it was serviced?

wait, question - does it shut off your air briefly when it makes the sound?

The only time mine has ever done that sort of thing is when I'm testing it OUT of the water. I was told that is normal, and it has never happened to me while in the water. Are you int he water or out?

I believe it should be obvious if there is a tear on the diaphram, then it should be leaking underwater. I think it may be one of the o-rings that is affecting the performance of the regulator.

If it's you regulator, the thump-thump-thump is your regulator saying "Take me in for service...Now!"

It could be a weak spring, a failing o-ring or a problem with the tension on a downstream valve. Also could be an unblanced first-second stage setup. May be a need to adjust a piston

If you need a second opinion: Get it serviced.

Thanks, everyone... got it serviced (had creeping IP, among other things), and worked great... did a dive to 110' off Boyington Beach, FL over Thanksgiving...

Sounds like a problem in the downstream valve; possibly even water in the hose. Make sure that before you attach the first stage to the tank that there is NO water on the tank yolk or on the filter screen of the first stage.
