"fog" in SPG

OK, I admit it.....at some point I guess I got some water in a tank (I don't think a tank....) or, at least, water in my first stage, because suddenly I have a "fog" in the dial of my SPG. I have taken it off the hose, and am trying to dry it out under a light bulb. I seem to be able to remove the fog temporarily, but it comes back after it cools back off. Does anyone have an idea about how to remove the water (hence the fog) from inside the spg?

not really any way to remove moisture without taking it apart, which will then most likely cause it to leak.

You pretty much have to deal with it or replace it.

However, I'm betting that you'll see rust in it soon and need to replace it. (mine flooded and rusted soon after on the inside).

That fog is not from water or moisture in a tank. The pressure sensing mechanism is sealed so any water that enters from the tank, regulator, or hose is contained within that mechanism. Your fog is coming from a failure of the sealed SPG case. These are screwed and/or glued together and have an overpressure release valve on the back (in case the inner mechanism fails). Any of the connection seals or valve could fail resulting in the fog you are seeing. It is probably not something you will be able to fix. I know my older metal SPGs have a screwed on face that is O-ring sealed but I have never tried to open one up (yet). You could check with a shop but I suspect such leaks are not economically repairable in newer SPGs. And, while a little moisture is a good indication that your SPG is on the downhill side of its life span, it may work OK for quite a while longer before it has to be replaced.

Now, c'on, awap, you act as if my SPG was 30 yrs old or something! I really don't think it is over 22 (bought it in '85)! Judging by your note, maybe I ought to assume that I've gotten my money's worth out of this one, and break down and buy a new one???.....hmmmmm Seriously, thanks for your input and advice. Good info!!

My SPG had water droplets show up inside after the first dive to 100 ft. Took it back to the LDS. They replaced it and sent the original back to the company.

I had mine fog & it just will get worse & worse.

You are just going to have to bust out & get a new one.

When you end up replacing the spg consider getting a brass and glass one.Initial cost is more but it will last a lot longer.

this is a good source

How much longer than 27 years do you suppose it would last?

Take the battery out and blow dry it off with hair dryer, just be carefull enough not to over heat the inside. Wait for a couple of hours before putting back the battery and reclose the compartment.
