How does one get certified to service their own equipment?

I have been looking for a 2nd stage inline adjustment tool for Mares Regs and I think that the one offered by Peter Built Co is a good bet. I would really like to find a place that would certify you to work on Mares Regs.

i do not know the formal cert but i know that when i attended the Florida state university last year they offered a gear service and repair class. i wonted to take it but you had to be advanced through the school and log like 50 dives.

I strongly disagree with this statement. The books are totally different, but if you are buying one to take you step by step through basic reg repair and service, the Harlow book is written much more clearly and practically.

Reg savvy is a book about regulator design and function, and is mostly theoretical discussion about the various forces at work in regulators. It's an excellent resource for understanding what makes regulators work, and for understanding the various designs out there. But on it's own, it is not useful as a guide for DIY service. Also, the language and style of this book is a little tedious; much harder to read than the Harlow book.

Divers of all experience levels, ages and abilities read this forum....

Please be cautious pursuing any self maintenance of your equipment. This is not like a weekend home depot project and your life could depend on it. Regulator service is inexpensive compared to your life or the life of your dive buddy who could be endangered by your miscalculation.

If this equipment maintenance is something you wish to pursue you should receive proper training and practical experience first.

Would you try cave diving after reading a book on it?

How many threads have we seen just on this forum where someone had their regs 'professionally' serviced and they didn't work?

Guess how many hours of training it takes to receive 'proper training' aka factory certification?

The fact is that the industry as a whole does not do a good job at reg service.

Not a problem.

In the end we are all responsible for our own well being. That being said this is a public forum and there is allot of useful information, suggestions and ideas. It is the individuals responsibility to decipher and decide what is best for them.....
