Spades are good eating in my opinion. They are just a little tough to clean compared to other fish. I recommend you try eating one to decide for yourself. You will probably like them OK. They are a pretty easy fish to spear, at least in NC/VA area.

Spades have got to be the easiest fish to spear. At least in the gulf anyway. They are not bad eating. Like the above said hard to clean and not as much meat as others but none the less good eats.

Meat is very white, almost like yellowtail. /thing is fillets are midfish and up, lower half is all rib cage. Easy to spear, they are tame and curious. First one my buddy speared was we were doing a safety stop and he was just poking them gently to amuse himself and one got impaled. So we poked a few more, all still on the same spear. Made ceviche for the ride back in.

I like them, and they are very easy to spear. Try cleaning them like a flounder, cutting down the lateral line of the fish first and then cutting the meat away from the rib cage.
