Pole Spear or Hawaiian Sling
I'm in the market to get either a pole spear or a Hawaiian Sling and I do not know which one to buy. I really don't know anything about either of them, but I would like to learn to get fish without a gun. I do most of my diving off of SC so my targets will be hogs, spades, flounder, sheepsheads, and grouper up to about 15 lbs or so. If you have any recommendations on which one I should order, please send me a link to it, and give me a reason why you think that that one is the best. I have also heard that they make some which have a trigger mechanism which holds the spear in the cocked position until you are ready to fire it. If you know anything about this I would love to know how they work. Thanks.

I say you should have a gun, but if you are going to limit yourself to a pole spear or H sling, go for a big ass Manny pole spear.

because with a H sling you are free shafting and can shoot through the fish and loseyour shaft in poor viz if you don't shoot dopwn on it and your typical tropical pole spear won't do well on 15 pounders IMO

Thanks for the input, I had back surgery and haven't been in the water too much lately, but I just did a dive and have another one booked 4th of July week. I went diving a few weeks ago for the first time and I managed to break my spear gun while I was loading it for the first time. I did not even get a shot off. I did however manage to spear a fish by just stabbing it with the spear in my hand. That made me feel like a man again. I think that I will probably go with a pole spear, that Manny one seems nice but is pretty pricy. is their anything else on the market that will get the job done for less money? Thanks again for the help.

Hey Trey,
I hope you are doing well after surgery. A barbed 3 prong paralyzer will work well for smaller fish. A slip tip http://www.leisurepro.com/Prod/JBL890.html for larger 8lb. Ray Odor has a good inexpensive pole spear. New Page 0 Also Carl Krupansky National Divers - good quality and inexpensive fiberglass- about $30 from local dive shops including tip. Just cut the tines with a Dremel tool or hacksaw and use a chisel to spread the barbs. |
