How to dispatch a big fish.
Another thought has occurred to me. Now that I have ordered a new pole spear, what is the best way to deal with a big angry speared fish. I imagine that a 25 lb grouper can put up a nasty fight, what do you do after you have speared the fish to subdue him?

Braining and De-gilling
Trey,
Most will brain the fish by slipping a sharp stiletto type blade or pick type blade into the fish's head and give it a twist. The fish will shudder then stop moving. This is the most humane. I was taught to rip out the gills on one side. Not as humane, but quick and dirty. Does not require good placement of blade, or a pointy blade or spike that can hole your BC. Remember that some large fish attack. Don't want to get legs/arms cut/gouged. Control the head. Keep the fish's mouth away from hand/fingers. |

The fish in my avatar is a black fin tuna that got tagged by a cuda as I was reeling it in off the coast of Honduras.

Take your knife and stab him in the head. I know sounds bad but hey we are in the forum of hunting. You can also stone a fish by spearing him in the head like if he's lying under a wreck or in a coral structure (hole). He's not going anywhere if you stone him.
