I'm going out on the Magician out of San Pedro on lobster opening night. Anybody else going to be there too?

Do the lobsters on the West coast have the large claws like the ones we have in the NE or are they similar to the ones in Florida?

First, a disclaimer: I'm certainly no expert on West coast diving, but I'm working on it.

From what I know, the lobsters out here don't have the large claws. Here is a pic of a Pacific lobster I took last year in Hawaii.

They taste just as good though!!!

That's a slipper lobster. You won't really see too many of those around SoCA. THIS is a CA Spiny Lobster:

As you can see... no claws. Lobster season opening day is Sept 29th

How many lobsters will I need to catch to justify the cost of my new
hobby to my wife? Man, I'm gonna have to get certified soon, when does
the season end?

Rakkis, Thanks for the clarification. Admittedly, I'm no expert on life on this side of the world.

That's a little too far out for us to be able to commit right now, but we'll be there if we can.

<DIV>Only 1. Once she tastes the "free" lobster you brought her, she'll be down with you going diving every night. The California season starts Sept. 29th and ends March 19th. </DIV>

A NE lobster (an American Lobster) is a NE lobster - all the rest are... well... something less. You are a luck diver if you can hunt the cold waters of NE!

The lobsters with claws are not very closely related to the rock lobsters or spiny lobsters and taste very different.

On a side note - did you know it is illegal to sell a dead lobster [prior to food prep] in MA?
