Head shots, behind the eye are always a good choice. Anywhere along the lateral line will most likely hit the spine and result in stoning the fish.
If the fish is swimming fast, aim slightly ahead of the fish. I hear that the only way to hit a tuna is to aim 6 inches in front of it. Someday;-) Are you free shafting, lineshafting, or polespear? Good Luck.

You wanna hear something funny,
Last 2 Fridays ago I shot a 28" Gag head on just below the eye, ruining the grouper cheek, the shaft came out midway down the side as I was at a slight angle and that big bastar* took my mono line and my shaft in a crevice. I had to get on my knees reach both hands under the rock and grab the SOB by the gill plates and pull my heart out to get that thing out from under the rock. Took me 10 minutes. After I got him out and put him on the stringer, It took me another 5 minutes to untangle the mono line connected to my spear. Fish had some balls. Good stuff |

You know the funniest thing is that may be where your aiming but something always go's wrong and your fighting the fish on you line shaft. I can just see hitting a big pompano or cobia and freeshafting and watching that sucker just cruise off with your spear. there goes 50 bones.
My boy dove a wreck off Anclote here in tarpon springs two weeks ago and when they pulled up to it there were other divers just leaving. They went down and had nearly 50 ft of viz (in 65 ft). When he got to the bottom he swam up on a 42" Amberjack with a 7.1 MM Rifffe Spear in it laying on the bottom still breathing. Thanks to the other divers for freeshafting and hitting a big enough fish to cruise off with a $60 spear that I now own (I the only one of my boys who has a Riffe that will fit the shaft). Free fish - didn't even have to work for it. You gotta stone those suckers. Hit them in just the right spot (along the mid line or behind the eye just above the mid line) or you gonna have a fight on your hands. The problem with a fish like an amberjack is they just don't know when to die. |
