There is nothing wrong with PADI, but yes, some of the "speciality certs" are kinda silly.. "boat diving"..?
"Well I am a PADI certified boat diver... I know how to step off a boat and hit water... and I know what to call the bathroom oboard"
You need special classes and a certification for that?

Here's my take on this and this comes from having worked with student in AOW classes as a DM. Make sure you are comfortable in the water and have buoyancy control. I seen a few AOW students that where bouncing off the bottom and couldn't hover. Get a few dives under your belt and understand some of the basic skill your you will not get the most out of AOW. You don't want to take this class and be always trying to do something when you should be learning other skills.
