I agree, it might be an issue if he gets a forming mouth piece for the positioning of his teeth. But I don't know if it would actually be a serious issue unless you go diving with your son every day. Once or twice might not be an issue. I would wait until he is not in any pain or if he is feeling pain in his gums give it some more time but it shouldn't really be an issue.

Yeah, it has turned out to be a non-event. Once the gums calmed down after a few weeks, he has had no problem just using a standard mouthpiece.

Diving with Braces

Well, as a diver who dove for several years with braces, as well as now diving with retainers, I can tell you the following:

You can dive with both.

If you dive right after having an adjustment or when they are doing the spacers, you may experience some soreness.

When you graduate from braces and move on to retainers, I recommend putting the retainers in the case and not diving with them, but you can do both.

My dive partner was wearing braces last week, didn't hear any complains from him. And he was using el-cheapo mouthpieces, so you shouldn't have much to worry about.

also if it was me and i had braces and was going diving in a few weeks i would put the mouthpiece i had in mouth for a few mins at a time and get used to the fill of the braces and mouth piece out of water if you had the extra air
