You will learn about the bends in your basic open water class.'
In a nutshell: Breathing compressed air (which is unnatural) at depth causes nitrogen ( a gas your body is not used to) to be forced into the your, blood, tissue , muscles and joints, Since this is not "natural" , you must go to the surface slowly to allow the nitrogen to leave viia the blood stream while you breath. Think of turning the top off a bottle of soda too quickly. the bubbles (in this case CO2) cause the soda to fiz up. Do it slowly and there is no fizzing. If you go to the surface too quickly, the nitrogen will expand in your joints and blood causing many problems.
