They will burn longer but won't be as bright. The HID is still here to stay for a while.

You thinking you might need a bit brighter of a light my friend?

Well oxycheq is claiming that their 3W backup is brighter than a 10W HID, and that a handheld primary will be out in a couple of months, with a canister primary 2 months after that. My question is if Adam at what works, works will be making an xtension in the meantime. That could be a sweet light...

No underwater video yet, but this makes it look like the 3W does stack up pretty well against the 10W HID:

YouTube - OxyCheq 3W LED Backup Light

It's rated for 4 hrs battery life on 3 AAs.

the salvos are pretty awesome!! the 12w led that is I have heard that it works better in a cave, but doesnt penetrate silt as well as a 10w HID

one thing though is my friend got the 12w LED fromSalvo, and it was flikering under water, hes taking it by Barry in a couple of days to get it fixed.

That depends on what you're looking at. Barry says his new 12w LEDs are absolutely better in every way than his 10w HIDs, which is why he dropped the 10w HIDs from his lineup. So if you're in the market for a 10w-class can light, LED is apparently the way to go, finally. (From Salvo, at least, which had the best 10w HIDs out there, so that's saying something!)

At the 21w level and up, however, HID is still king. How long it will remain is anyone's guess, but there's nothing out there right now that can touch a 21 HID. Even the 21w LEDs that Salvo sells, Barry says the HID is better.

I took one of the new 12W Rebels to Turks and Caicos a couple of weeks ago. Nice clear, white light. Unfortunately, there were some problem lights in that production run, and mine failed a couple of days out. It's back at Salvo and I'm waiting to hear what happened. I'm not fond of the Goodman handle with the elastic strap and the fact that the light head can be pulled out of it. I might end up upgrading to the 21W LED because of that.

I'm the friend with the strobing primary.

It was kind of cool in clear water, but when I silted the area up (exploring a silty lake...it happens, pulling on crap that's been dropped down there has a tendency to do it.) and it started doing it's strobing thing....that was downright freaky.

However, I was able to nurse it along. It seemed to only start after a few minutes of being on, so by turning it off for a few minutes, I was able to use it for some time still, for a few minutes at a go. If an HID failed, they usually just fail, fail. No half fail. Total fail.

I love the light output, love the canister....don't really love the twist on head. I'd honestly prefer a switch on the can. And I don't really love the snap on goodman, would prefer something screwed on.

But, I'm taking her to Barry sometime this week and hopefully will get it straightened out. I'm honestly a little upset that a light would fail like this after only 10 minutes in the water, and I would like an explanation as to what exactly went awry. I don't think I did anything to the light to cause such behaviour....

Mine's on the way back to me, with a rigid Goodman handle replacing the elastic(still clip-in, though). Sounds like a gremlin in the electronics. One thing I am going to do is to attach the bolt snap to the groove at the back of the light head, instead of to the Goodman handle. I don't want to take a chance on the head being pulled out the the handle while gearing up, and hitting the deck. Good service from Salvo regarding the whole thing.

what is it about the HID that makes it better in silt? is it a more focused beam?
