I will be in Raleigh next summer for the North American Science Fiction convention (NASFic), Aug 5-8. I may have to come down a couple of days early to check out the local diving and hopefully meet some local forum members.

Great time of year to dive...but at the coast. (The quarry near Raleigh is not great on it's best days and will be a no vis algae fest in August.) Wilmington is about a 2 hour drive from Raleigh, Morehead about 3 hours. Most people I know vastly prefer Morehead. Happy to help you out with whatever info you need and happy to be your dive buddy if you need one. Chicken will vouch for me. I would advise giving yourself a bit of padding if you can. Our ocean conditions can be rather unpredictable. I've seen people truck here from the other side of the country, plan 2 days of diving, and get none. IMHO if your schedule allows, plan 3-4 days and you will surely get 2 or 3 and can enjoy something else if the dive gets blown out. Chicken had...I'm not sure...but maybe 9 trips which didn't happen. So definitely don't plan to dive when he is planning to
By the way, the Marriott is MUCH nicer/newer than the Sheraton if you are staying in the convention hotels. Loads of good restaurants walking distance from both.
