Thanks for the link jack. I still think the report was alarmist and sensationalist though. The fact they are migrating is interesting enough without the need to portray them as man killers... I suppose if they were just innofensive squid, they would ne be getting any attention at all... And the reporters would ignore them...

Oh well...

This is one of few news items that a solid warning overstating the potential dangers to people may actually be a good thing. I mean that relating to a bunch of unqualified divers thinking it'd be really cool to go look for these at night otherwise.

I understand your worries. But if people are stupid enough to go looking for potentially dangerous marine life... And O.K., I know they are... Well it's not too bright... It would be like divers looking to go diving with Great whites, without a cage... And I'm curious to see if these "shallow water" incursions are going to become a regular thing, or not... Because if they retain their regular behaviour of deep water habitat, it will be easy for divers to stay clear of them... Now if large numbers start occupying the shallows, that's another story...

You're right that a good informative warning about these creatures is a good precautionary measure. But reporters always seem to have to add in!They have flesh ripping beaks... And deadly hooks on their tentacles...". A good, solid, fact based report to the dive community is all it takes...

Cheers!
