OK. I'm goin in.
First, split fins DO work in current. Ok. Got that out of the way. As a general rule they are more efficient for the typical rec diver. You will get better torque from paddle fins and quicker starts, but harder to maintain speed if that is what you need. when I dive in currents, I like my splits because I often have to swim against a fast current. Of course if you are strong enough, with paddle fins you may do fine. Paddles are better for alternate kicks such a s frogs, back kicks and their derivitves and much more "precise" than splits. If 1987 is your birth year and you are in reasonably good shape, I would not bother with splits for your first fin. You kind of need to develop a less intiutive kick to use them efficiently. Check out tha Mares line. You can get Quatro's at a very good price now a days.

I used paddle fins for my OW and AOW classes and have now gone to split fins. My main reason was simply for comfort. With split fins I am much more comfortable and relaxed during my dive. They work well in current and I can see no advantage in going back to paddle fins for typical recreational diving.

I use split fins since about since months ago after diving for years. I was introduced to them in a drysuit class since the fins I was using were too small for the drysuit boots. I am sure there are non splits with large foot pockets out there too. Since using the splits I have really enjoyed them and they sure are easier on the muscles as I would occasionally develop cramps during a dive and that is gone now.

It seems that whether of not splits or paddles work for you is a matter of kicking style. I tried a pair of splits a month ago and after 10 minutes of I felt like I wasn't getting any thrust out of them and went back to paddles.
