or Tusa Zooms/Mares Raptors...
both (Bio-fin and Zoom/Raptor) are excellent at avoiding cramps and are very easy to fin with... the only thing I don't like about the Bio-fins is how heavy they feel... I don't know if they are any different weight wise, but they feel heavier on my feet than the Zooms/Raptors do (Zooms and Raptors are nearly identical)

Also don't forget to stay well hydrated! This will help with muscle cramps.

Maybe he could change his technique. Go with a frog kick or a wider, slower scissor kick. But that does not work with split fins When I first bought my Turtle fins they were hard on my legs. But after a month or so of use you kind of get used to them. Different fins are like different gears on a bicycle. If it gets hard to peddle then down shift. Those tusa fins are the lowest gear. |

The best fins for not cramping are Apollos. In the water, they are not noticeably heavy and having a slight negative buoyancy will not be noticed unless dropped or comparing to a positive buoyancy fin. Slightly negative or positive buoyancy will have little effect on the amount of work. I also have the Raptors that are about the stiffest splits = will not help as much in reducing cramping. I bought my sister the TUSA X-Pert Zooms that are similar to the Raptors, but not as stiff rails. My Apollos are the easiest to use. The best thing is to use a kick board in a swimming pool and develop the leg muscles before going out and overdoing it with fins.

Force Fins!!
The difference between my Force Fin Pros and my Cressi Rondines is amazing. I was always getting calve cramps with the Cressis and never with the Force Fins. Nonetheless, I go faster with less effort with the Force Fins. He should give them a try. |

In case you arent aware, other than type of fins, and of course keeping hydrated, the most common cause of muscle cramping for most people is actually a drop in their potassium levels. Buy a bottle of potassium supplement at the local drug store. Try the advised dosage for a week before and then during the dive days...bet it helps :-)
