Mask question
I am currently using a Tusa mask- I think it's called a Platina? Anyways, its a 2-lens mask. It seems to fit just fine, and I didn't have any problems with it in the pool. Afte rthe open water dives, however, I had a red mark on the left side of the bridge of my nose. It actually felt like my nose was broken, it was so sore.
I'm assuming it's because the mask must be touching my nose there, and at depth it's compressing against my nose? Anyone have any suggestions? I guess if I had been thinking properly, I would've tried on some masks while my nose was sore- that would've let me know what hit my nose and what didn't....but then again, it was swollen. Anyone know of a mask that has a broader bridge? I don't have a really broad nose, but it does have a little 'kink' right there at the bridge. Thanks in advance! |

If the mask seems to fit fine on the surface it may be possible that the mask may be getting somewhat compressed when under water. Most divers keep the airspace in the mask at ambient pressure by exhaling through the nose, many without even noticing they are doing so. Next time you are diving the mask exhale a bit through your nose to keep the mask from being squeezed as you descend. This may fix the problem. If that fails see a plastic surgeon and get your nose shortened.

I have a big - narrow nose. I just fit into a Tusa Liberator Plus. I usually do not have any issues. But, on a few occasions I will notice sore areas. It took me a while to figure out what was different. It usually comes back to strap tension and or placement. If I have the strap too high on my head I get a sore spot under my nose. If I have the strap too tight (extra bulk of hood or beenie) I get a sore spot on my forehead. Try loosening your mask strap. Also, be aware of mask squeeze. Breath out through your nose on descent to equalize the air space in your mask.
I hope this helps.
