Mask Shenanigans

Was in the LDS for some rental tanks (sorry Larry, no ST around here) and the wife was browsing the masks while I was filling out the necessary paperwork. She pointed out a nice looking ScubaPro black skirt mask and asked me to check it out. My wife (Amy) said "this looks exactly like your mask". Amy was right. But guess what, my mask is not a ScubaPro.

The mask on display was exactly the same as my TUSA Liberator PRO. The only difference was the red tabs on the side and the "ScubaPro" logo where mine says "Liberator".

Just a reminder to the label whores, know your source!

That is not unique to masks... Many companies don't make all, or sometimes, even much of the gear that gets their name slapped on it. Scubapro buys masks and some reg components from Tusa. Sherwood gauges and computers come from Oceanic / Aeris. Dive Rite buys Seiko computers, as does Tusa and Cressi, and they drop their names on them.

Many times I'll have a customer that wants a brand X product, and I tell them I can save them a bunch by giving them brand Y which is the exact same product... but they insist on brand X. The customer is sometimes...er.. I mean always right!

I noticed this when my wife and I got our masks in the personal gear package..The package says Genesis Panview, however her mask has a Tilos label on it and mine says Oceanic...Did a little research and can't find any difference from one companies "panview" to the other. I have always wondered who actually made the masks though..
