Snorkel Poll

I know people have asked this question, but I am really on the fence about this and would like some hard facts. Do you use a snorkel when scuba diving? Yes, not at all, or carry a backup?

Absolutely, never leave the boat without it. There are way too many times when it comes in handy and if the boat ever leaves me I definately want my snorkel.

Many say it gets in the way and it gets caught on things and a variety of other excuses not to wear it. I say that if you start wearing it regularly soon you won't even know it is there.

A very good practice in my opinion.

I have brought mine on all of my dives. Since I have always dove with it, I never even notice it is there.

Absolutely, on boat and shore (though I never did one) they can be indispensable. I have been on "cattle boats" where I floated for 10mins waiting for others to make it up the ladder. If I was out of air, or very close I would use my snorkel.

I understand the argument about entanglement but I don't do wrecks or caves....so the argument is mute.

I never dive with a snorkle. Having said that, I am going to get 1 of those fold up snorkles just to put in a pocket.

I dive about 60% fresh water dives, where a snorkle just isn't required. And in the ocean, I avoid the cattle boats as much as possible, so there is rarely a wait of more than a few minutes. But, I should have a snorkle just for emergencies in the ocean. If I was on the surface with no air, and rough seas, it wouldn't be much fun. I guess what I'm saying is that it will probably be needed as much as my SMB which I take on all ocean dives, but have never had to use (Knock on wood).

This is my 250th post . I'm a GROUPER!!!
