Purge Masks
I am curious as to your opinions on purge masks. My husband has one and thinks they are ok, but his mask doesn't fit me and I don't really want to buy one as they seem to cost more than a normal mask. I mean clearing isn't a big deal for me but I can see a purge valve being pretty convenient too.
Thoughts? |

None of the purge masks I tried on fit me. Some people love them...others say they leak easy. My opinion is that if you are ok with clearing your mask the traditional way...go with a standard mask. But then again, I'm just a novice. ;-)

I started with a purge mask.
The pros: Easier to clear if you have any constrictions in your nasal passages, takes less force. Cons: As CRNA said: An fail point. They do get clogged with well, snot and then don't work until the mask is taken off and cleaned. IMHO if you do well with a regular mask, I would go with the regular mask.

Purge masks are a gimick. Clearing a mask is as easy a task as there is in scuba. Get a regular mask. Less chance of failure, cheaper. As can be said of many other scuba gimicks, it's a solution in search of a problem.

Masks with purge cost about $10 more than its nonpurge equivalent.
With the soft silicon feathered seals on today's masks, purge valves are not really needed. I have a SeaDive TruVu RayBlocker and a TUSA with purge. I have been using masks with purge valves for over 40 years. The only failures were the old rubber valves that rotted away. The new valves are silicon. http://www.leisurepro.com/Cat/Contex...Masks/958.html |

Well its nice to see everyone's opinions. I dunno, maybe I'm never meant to find a proper fitting purge mask, but according to some I'm not missing out on too much...I'm weird with the fits, finding a good mask was difficult (I must have an oddly shaped head, cause I can't wear sunglasses either).
