Mask Questions

During my open water check out dives i used two different masks one the first day and one the second day. On the first day i used a single lens Atomic Aquatics mask and on the second day was a two lens purge mask. During my first day diving the mask felt like it was trying to lift off and float away. The second day this didn't happen. Is it because of the mask or the amount of air that could have been trapped inside the mask.

I would say it's more the way the mask felt as well as how tight the strap was. You could also be exhaling some through your nose so it's lifting the mask up a little to vent the excess air which would give you that sensation. You wouldn't notice it as much if at all with a purge mask as the air is vented through the purge valve and you don't notice it.

I bet the purge in the nose was the difference. Less pressure builds and thus less mask "float" as you exhale thru your nose. Down side is purges often leak. A grain of sand or salt crystal and you will have a little leak.
