Fins and other gear for a n00b :)

Hello all,

I've got an upcoming trip to Guam where I will be tacking open water dive courses. I would like to try to get some gear before I leave, rent some while I am there.

I'm not in a position where I'm going to be diving very often, maybe once a year or every other year. I know three pieces of equipment I will definately own myself are a mask, snorkel, and fins/boots.

I'm a pretty big guy 6'2 3xl and I wear size 15 tennis shoes. I was hoping for recommendations on fins/boots that would fit big sasquatch feet like these.

I'd, also, like to hear recommendations on other equipment I should consider buying myself rather than renting - with the consideration that I won't be using the equipment on a regular basis.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

TIlos and Pinnacle both make boots in 15.

For fins, take a look at Turtles (one size), OMS slipstreams (XXL) and ScubaPro Jets (XXL)

Once you start diving i bet you'll be hooked and end up doing it more than once a year! I love my Cressi Frog fins although I don't know how big they make them.

Jason,

I rarely dive with a snorkel anymore so I probably wouldn't drop a lot of money on a high-end snorkel. The 2 biggest dollar items to purchase for diving would probably be a reg set-up and a BC. I would probably go with a BC first. Proper fit is so important with a BC. Since you mentioned your large size you might be harder to fit with a rental. I would focus on trying on several BCs until you find one that fits you best. I've never used a BP/W before, but I understand that they are very adjustable for different sized bodies. I wouldn't worry about a reg setup immediately until you find out exactly how much you would use it. Besides, any reg would work for you so a rental would be no problem here. Another nice thing about having your own BC is consistency - everthing is adjusted "just right" every time and you always know where everything is at (dump valves, weight release handles, accesories, etc.) without having to look.

Good luck with your gear search!

Thanks... between this and other desired expenses my wife is going to kill me.

I do know there's several places here in the states I would love to dive, just with work and .. more work and other stuff I do, it's hard to break free. Military's sending me to guam for a little while, long enough to get my certifications and then enjoy myself a bit.

I think I will look into getting a BC for the above mentioned reason, same with a wetsuit. Thanks for the links and advice... so how's about a loan? I kid.. I kid..

I was in Guam 8 times during my ship's deployment last year. MDA (on of the large dive shops) sells through the Navy exchange. They have very good prices on basic gear if you want to wait until you get there.
