I actually use my snorkle quite a bit -- surface swims, waiting to get on the boat, looking around at what's below me
while waiting for a buddy or
group to join me in the water, in choppy water...all the stuff you've heard mentioned already, i guess...
(There was one time I was thrilled to have it as i got to watch the antics of about 40 or more sea lions below and around me during a surface swim - neat!)

However!
I have gotten sick of it tugging on my mask strap, and all that crap they
put on snorkles now to make them stay "dry" is just a mess IMO.

I have purchased a very simple folding snorkle,
no purge valve (one grain of sand stuck in that and
your snorkle is now a big straw to suck up water through), and no "dry" baffles at the top. Its
pretty flexible and rolls up pretty small so I can stick it in my BC pocket.
I'm delighted!

I wear a snorkel, because I was taught that way. I'm a new diver. I may lose it after I finish my AOW later this year.

Probably will get a folding one.

Usually have it on when I shore dive.

Usually don't use it from the boat because if the sea state is that rough, I'm not in it.

When doing PS dives I have a FFM and have no use for the snorkel.

The only time I wear one is when my wife and I snorkel. Diving, no.

After this past weekend, I won't typically wear mine anymore. Just felt like it kept getting in the way.

I would not mind a fold up one to stow away, however.

I have not gone diving in quite a long time so I forgot how ANNOYING a snorkel can be! I did not use it at all during my 3 recent dives, but it was still attached to my mask. I think I lost most of the hair in my left temple from the snorkel clip (or the snorkel itelf). This was the most annoying and useless piece of equipment I had..
I might use a snorkel while snorkeling, but when I have a tank and reg, I either just use the reg, or just breath air through my mouth while on the surface or swimming (I always swim on my back, so my face is always facing up).

Keep it

I always keep mine in my pocket. If you come up and the boat is gone a 12 hour swim is difficult without it. Of course I always wear it when teaching as it is a PADI standard.
