clear skirt discoloring

how bad do they discolor? Do they just kinda go yellow or what? I just ordered a back up mask. I had to go clear because a black on black was not available in the mask that I now have and know fits. I started diving a clear skirt. I lost it on my last check out dive so I never got a chance to see how these things actually discolor.

Thanks for any info

They will discolor over time and use...nothing you can do to stop it,,,just preform your normal rinsing.....usually they take on a yellowish cream color tint....does not effect the silicon though.

Thank you! My current mask is a black skirt so I had no idea to what extent clear would degrade. Just seemed like a good idea to keep an extra in the dive bag, and like I said clear was the one avail.

I do appreciate your response.

I have had my clear skirt mask about a year and I did notice it had taken on a slight yellow hue. My next mask will be black.

Hey Goober, I have a "POS" US Divers mask I bought @ Walmart about 8 yrs. ago. It has a clear skirt and has not been kept up too well. It was originally bought and used as a river/creek snorkel mask. The kids, grandkids and just about everyone else has abused it. Aside from the bright blue and yellow spot where one of the yard heatherns laid it on another "POS" mask it has a fairly clear skirt. It hasn't really yellowed or anything. It's more like it dulled up. I recently scrubbed the skirt with some Crest and small amount of slate cleaner, and it really helped. It is now my backup and I carry it in my bag. Hope this info is helpful.

If you keep them away from neoprene or any other rubber stuff it helps a lot. I keep mine in a box, they go many years without yellowing. Some people also say not leaving them in the sun helps.

Yup, they'll discolor over the years. I heard that rubbing it down with a silicone gel/serum helps it not discolor as much or as quickly.

I've used my mask a couple of dozen times over the last year, and have always stored it in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. I have an identical mask that has maybe 5 dives over the same period. The first one is noticeably yellower than the second, but not in a way that's really distracting.

In short, yes it will change color simply with use. For some, that's a good enough reason as any to go with black.

I have one that is starting to yellow. I rinse and store it but still... As long as the seal is good it doesn't really bother me. If your about it looking really nice black is the best bet.
