Black skirt for low vis

I read this in another forum. It was in a section on low vis diving tricks. Sounds reasonable, but I've never thought about it that way.

So, I guess that you will be trying it out and then posting the results of your observations in the forum ???

I know it's a requirement for alot of technical diving courses to have the black skirted mask... so I'm assuming their must be something to it!

I have both a black skirted and a clear skirted Big Eyes mask, I think I might try them out against each other and see how they compare.

Maybe It’s just me… but I notice a big difference in shallow water on sunny days. The black skirt comes in handy. It’s like shielding your eyes with your hand when the sun is over head. It seems easier to focus on what you’re looking at. Less glare maybe.

Ditto.

I also do a lot of fossil/artifact hunting while diving, and I notice it much easier to spot things like shark's teeth when diving with a black skirt. I think it keeps me focused on what I am looking for instead of letting my eyes wander around.

I have both a clear and black skirt mask. I have found that I like using the black mask much more than the clear one. Like everyone else has said it does help keep your eyes focused straight ahead. I do a lot of lake diving and the vis is under 15' most of the time. Even then the black mask is my favorite.

I have done a side by side comparison. I did one dive with the black mask and one with the clear one. Same lake, depths and vis. The clear mask let in so much light from the sides that the glare was hard to deal with. My eyes felt tired after the dive. With the black mask the glare was gone and my eyes felt much more relaxed.

I would say try them both but if you are like me you will stick with the black mask.

Good luck.

can you get a black skirt on most masks, or only certain brands and whatnot?

Alot don't offer the option for a black skirt. Each brand has some though, just gotta find the right model.

I prefer a black skirt with matching bra and panties...........Oh you were talking about diving......nevermind.

I've only been diving with clear masks but thinking about trying out a black skirted one to see the diffference
