my first night dive

i did my first night dive May 8 at the Japanese Fuel Piers on Naval Station Guam. during the day while i thought about the upcoming dive i must admit that i was a little restless. Once i got to the site and got my gear altogether i started to feel better. Once we went under i lost all my fear. there was so much to see. it was an incredible dive and i really look forward to my next night dive. i guess you could say that i am hooked!

Glad it worked out OK for you. Night dives are a really different experience, especially just after twilight when there are lots of shadows underwater. One of my most memorable dives was off of Crete on a night with a full moon.

Night diving is great. Welcome to one of the great underwater experiences.

I love the way attention is focussed on the small area lit by the light. A great way to find small inverts and the like.

It's odd, but I really prefer low vis (5-10 feet not 1-2 feet) dives at night to them during the day

Night dives are great, I love them too. You see different things that during the days.

Just curious but does the flashlight illuminate a fairly large area or only what the beam is shined on?

Sounds like you had a great time...now you need to do night dives in Kona with the Mantas and Lembeh Straits where all the Dark side creatures come out at nite!

It depends on a lot of factors:

The visbility, how much particulate is in the water (granted, part of vis, but more stuff means more light scatter like in some uw photos.), how bright the light is, the angle of the beam as well as the focus of your light. All play a part in it.

Most of the time, the beam is somewhat tight so there is not a lot of light scatter. The better the light the less scatter.
