Instructors in New York?

I'd like to get to learn diving a bit more, me being new to it.
Does anyone know of any good places to learn in New York (5 borough's and LI)

Altough I have never dived with them, I have always been impressed with the Scubanetwork store in Garden City, LI. Ask for Martha.

Carle Place, Long Island
245 B Old County Road
(516) 997-4864

They also have two stores in the city, but I believe that they are all individually owned and run franchises.

I have used the Panaqua store, but in CT. Don't know much about the instructors in the NY store.

Pan Aqua Diving
461 Federal Road
Brookfield, CT 06804

Ask for Peter

Pan Aqua Diving
460 W. 43rd Street
New York, NY 10036

OW cert will probably be at Dutch Springs anyway, if you do it locally.

Not sure how far east you are going on LI - There is a nice small shop in Port Jefferson that offers a great certification, plus they have some trips to Dutch Springs for Spec. and Advance certs. The name of the shop is port diver - http://www.portdiver.com/index.php. Also a place in Rocky Point called Swim King - http://www.swimkingscuba.com/ They are getting an indoor facility built for pool dives and gear checkout. Probably a year before that happens though. nice people, never did a cert with them though.

Another great full service shop, with an onsite heated pool, all introductory and advanced courses, that carries a wide inventory of products from most of the major manufacturers is Long Island Scuba - www.longislandscuba.com
They are located in western Suffolk County, Lindenhurst, NY.

Wherever you decide, good luck with your training and diving!

LI Dive Shops

Depends on where you are at and how much you want to travel. Another GREAT shop is Atlantic Dive Center (631)281-1303. Great shop awsome instructor (Frank) small flexible classes.

Does anyone know the prices of the open water and advanced OW classes in those LI schools? There are no prices listed. Also, I was told i should do NAUI instead of PADI as they offer a more thorough cert (the guy was an editor for a diving mag). Are there any places on the Island that offer that cert?

You can argue PADI vs NAUI all day. My advice is to go with a good instructor at a reputable shop, then dive with someone experienced. You can have a superb PADI instructor or a terrible NAUI instructor, the agency doesn't imply the quality of instructor.

As somebody mentioned above, Longisland Scuba in Lindenhurst is good. They have their own pool, and lots of classes including Tech stuff. My wife used Seascapes in Syosset and had a pretty good experience.
