Winter lobster in Rockport?
Hello,
Has anyone gone diving in Rockport, Mass for lobster in the winter? I have a new(used) drysuit that needs to see the ocean. I checked out the suit in a local pond and it works just fine and is now ready for action. My dive buddies ,who have done a half dozen winter dives, say that there are no lobster in the usual Rockport shore diving areas. They say no flounder, cunner or cod either. Does anyone have a different experience? |

Water temps have bee hanging at 39 deg and there are a few early critters coming in - a couple of Sea Ravens at Old Garden Beach and one buddy swears he saw two small lobsters. Mostly what I've seen are the smaller invertabrates. The advantages to going now are easy parking, no mosquitos and much better vis than in the warmer months. Folly Cove, for instance, is a whole new dive site when the vis is better than 30 ft. !
So KingBiscuit, get out and enjoy a power hour!

I have maybe 100 dives in that area during the winter months.
There are very FEW lobsters or fish present when the waters are in the 30sF (plenty of sea urchins...). Winter diving in MA is all about good visibility and no crowds. If you just dive to hunt, stay home. If you just like being in the water, though, run, don't walk, to the nearest sites on Cape Ann. |
