Quick question about tanks

i keep hearing people saying al80 everywhere when people are talking about tanks. what's the 80 stand for? that means it good up to 80 feet, right?

You're joking, right?

For any who are actually curious, an AL80 tank is scuba cylinder made out of alumnum with capacity of roughly 80 cubic feet (actually ~77.4).

I think it was a joke , but why only 77 cu ft. My steel 120 is like 121 cu ft.

I'm really not clear on why tanks aren't just called whatever their actual size is. As in a hp123 instead of a hp119 or an al77 (or 78) instead of 80. Makes no sense to me.

Thats what I thought too until he asked me this weekend if the recreational limits was 130 feet because 130cu tanks are about the biggest you can find...

I always thought you have to use an aluminum 80 to 80 foot depth, in 80 degree water with 80 ft. vis... now that's diving!
