Zeagle Envoy Interesting problem

I bought a Zeagle Envoy from ST while I was evacuated to Dallas During Katrina. Loved the reg from the first time I used it, although coming from an Oasis, the dry-mouth was more than a little noticeable.

Anyway the first year was great. Sent it in for annual, fast turnaround and dove with it on a trip. First day-great. Second Day AM- good, with a noticeable air leak through the secondary when reg was at rest. Ended up as a freeflow by the end of the dive. Took it to a Zeagle Dealer while my tanks were being filled for the PM dive, and he adjusted the second stage cracking pressure after verifying the IP was not high/creeping. No leaking while in the shop. Did the pm dives, and the slow leak was back by the end of the 1st dive.

Sent them back for adjustment when I got home and got them back again. Breathed fine on my tank in the garage. Cracking pressure was fine, etc.

Dove them again, and was fine on the first dive, and the leak was back on the second day. At this point, i figured that maybe I should have them looked at again, maybe some salt crystals were holding something open. I even popped the cover off, and looked inside, depressed the release lever and tightened down the adjustment more. Even fully in, the slow leak was apparent.

I was going to Dallas this past weekend, and brought the reg with me. I told them of its symptoms (This was before the store was even open for the day), and said "It's probably due for an annual, so you might as well do that, too." ST told me they could probably get it back to me on Saturday (1 day turnaround! Puts my LDS to shame by 3+ weeks).

Sure enough, when I checked in Saturday PM, the regs were ready. I asked what was done, and was told "Annual Service". HMMM> Can I check them? Put them on a tank and pressurized them. No leak. Took a breath, and hissssssssssss. So, I asked them to go through them again, specifically for that problem.

The report is that I had a nick on the "poppet", my blinker fluid was low, and my johnson rod was bent (not really, but the poppet was apparently nicked). The poppet is not part of the regular maintenance kit, and no word on how I managed to nick something I've never heard of, but it is supposedly fixed, finally.

So, all of you self-adjusters out there: There are apparently some items in the reg that are not replaced during annuals, there are parts in a reg not generally inspected, and ST replaced my poppet, refilled the blinker fluid, and straightened my johnson rod all on their nickel.

Anybody else have a mysterious leak on a 2005-2006 Envoy that no amount of adjusting will solve? Maybe your poppet needs a tune-up.

That is odd, but strange things sometimes happen.

I can, however, tell you that it is not a common problem...thank God.

Scott
Scott, is there a generic blinker fluid that meets all of the Zeagle Requirements?

Having to use the name-brand stuff at annual maintenance can be expensive! Not that I'm cheap, or anything.

Check the JC Whitney catalog...they may offer some after market parts.

Sounds like a fouled fetzer valve. Try flushing it with hogwash.

Seriously. I'm glad you finally found the root cause. Intermittent problems can be the hardest to troubleshoot.

Strangely, the fetzer valve was fine. You'd think with a bent johnson rod and a nicked poppet that the fetzer valve would be damaged as well.

I didn't have any hogwash, so I used Scope. Minty fresh and bacteria-free.

Hello everybody. I've been lurking around looking for a place to make my first post on this forum and I finally found it!

My wife and I both have Zeagle Envoys and we recently sent them in to ST for service. Got them back and went to the pool to check them out. My wife's second stage had a slight yet constant leak that I couldn't figure out. I probably would have tried to pool dive it just to see if it would have corrected itself. I routinely demo CESA in that pool anyway and this would have been just another training opportunity. However, I had just witnessed a guy about 2 weeks prior who had a similar situation and he tried to dive it. Within seconds it was a full blown, unstoppable free flow. I started wondering how many parts might get damaged or what I might screw up by diving a reg I just got out of service and decided to go the conservative route.

Anyway, I wrote Joe and Larry and got a quick reply. I sent the reg in and they have made the repairs at no cost of course and it's in the mail scheduled to arrive back home today. One of the things I respect most about ST is that they are honest. Honest people make mistakes everyday and instead of trying to lie or make excuses LIKE THE DIVE SHOP I WORK FOR, they simply make it right.

I'm not positive what the problem was yet, but I'm sure once I get the repair report it will spell it out for me. I'll post those results here.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't my Johnson rod because I have a shorter yet thicker Johnson rod and that makes it harder to bend.

Cheers.
