J-P, they are all good regulators for recreational diving and any of them will serve you well for that purpose. If one day you intend on doing technical diving (very deep), I would suggest the Abyss MR22 (it is the Mares tech oriented regulator).
The main difference will be slightly easier breathing with the Abyss MR22, compared to the two others. But will you notice the difference? Probably not... If you are tight on cash $$$, go for the Proton MR12. If you don't care about price, go for the Abyss MR22 (or even higher, there is a Proton V42 wich is supposed to be a dream!!!). I have a Proton V16 (discontinued model, which was between the MR12 and MR22 proton) and it breathes great! I can't find a single good reason to upgrade it to a higher end model. The Mares regs are good performers! ![]() |

J-P, the difference is the 2nd stage. Both regs use the MR12 1st stage. On one, you get the Abyss 2nd stage, on the other you get the Proton 2nd stage. They are both great 2nd stages, whith the Abyss being renowned as "more robust" and a bit heavier I believe. As I said, for recreational diving, both will work fine! I'd go for the least expensive of the two. If I wanted something more robust and tech oriented (for deep diving), I wouLdn,t go for the Abyss MR12; I would go for the Abyss MR22.
