Mares Abyss Freeflowing

I've got a Maress Abyss reg and it is EXTREMELY sensetive. With just a little turn up side down it starts free flowing like crazy. Can I fix it my self?or I better take to a dealer?thanks!

well, if it's not free flowing while just sitting there... it's probably not the first stage, so it will just take a little adjusting of the 2nd stage.

We had someone with the exact same situation with another mares, and we've got a nice thread with pictures and instructions...

See if this helps: Wifes Envoy Freeflowing

It's over in the How do I Fix this area...

It sounds like it may be adjusted just right for a primary 2nd. As long as it does not FF while it is in you mouth, it should breath quite well. Decreasing the sensetivity will also make it harder breathing. Why don't you just mark the link and see how it works out when you dive it.

I was guessing he already had it diving as he says if he turns it upsidown.. and I was assuming that's in the water..

Now you know, that is a normal sign of a well tuned reg. If it's full of water it should not free flow when you do that, but since regs are supposed to crack at about an inch of water pressure, give or take, the mouthpice is a good 2 inches plus above the diaphragm when you have it in that position - but if you turn it mouthpiece down, so the pressure is greater at the mouthpiece than the diaphragm... it should stop.

I've had students tell me "This reg free flows when I take it out of my mouth".

Me: "Then don't!"

I use the Abyss as my primary and haven't had much of an issue at all with free flowing. I wouldn't think they would have different sensitivity from the factory, or would they?

Yes, they could. And the poppet presses into a rubber seat - one may give just a bit more than another, and you will find even after diving with any reg - it can changes slightly after it cycles a bunch of times. That is one of the reasons for adjustable regs - to compensate for these little changes.

My Abyss will free flow occasionally. Other divers have told me that was "the nature of the beast". I still love mine
