If you're looking for an excellent reg that got nearly perfect scores in ScubaLab testing, check out the Zeagle Envoy Deluxe regs. They are affordable, adjustable, have a balance diaphram design, and breathe as well at 13 feet as at 133 feet (based on personal experience).

Give the guys at ScubaToys a call and have them price out a set for you....the price on the website isn't likely the price they'll sell it for.

as a new diver myself, I just got my first reg from this fine shop here. The Tusa RS130 is not a "top of the line" reg, but it has served me well in the 7-10 dives I've done with it. I've used it in the Caribbean, and the North Atlantic. (so a temp range of 50-80 F)
Would a more expensive reg be better? Probably, but this one kept me alive and dry in every position I could think of and so far, to 95 ft. So I am very happy with that reg.

I would second this, the Envoy Deluxe is an excellent reg for the price. Heck it would be an excellent reg at a greater price...It did get perfect breathing scores on the breathing machine when Scuba Diving tested it, and the testers had good things to say about it as well. The only other regs in the test that scored perfect on the machine were way more expensive.. Read for yourself

Check wikipedia and search for scuba regulator.. They have a pretty good explanation of the difference between piston and diaphragm with illustrations...

Good luck on your search!!

Find a shop with a pool that will let you try out a few. I feel, and the posts will confirm this, that comparing regs can be very subjective. The good news is that if you stick with the name brands they should all perform well for you. From that point on, its on you to decide which breaths the best within your budget.

Others have heard my story, but the short version is that after pouring over the posts and magazine articles, I went into my shop with a few in mind. After trying them, I didn't really like any of them and went for a brand and model that wasn't even on my short list.

Keep an open mind!

Now a days most lower end reg work great. Unless you doing extreme diving you don't need to spend $$$. I bought an Aeris pro on sale $199 this same reg now with dry valve is $400 just don't put water in the first stage. Buy what you can afford. Up grade later down the line

I am a new diver as well, also looking at my options. I am on budget as well. I found these reviews from Scuba Diving magazine to be very useful. Mind you, its a lot of information :-) http://www.scubadiving.com/gear/regulators
