New reg setup question
I just ordered my first reg setup. I decided on the mares proton 12 package from ST. Here's my question, what do I need to do when I get it? Do I need to do anything to it to break it in? Or just pop it on a tank and go? We're diving on sunday, regs coming wednesday, so I plan on picking up a tank early to make sure every thing works, but is there more that I should do?

When I get mine back, I put it on a tank to check it out. My buddy always gets in the pool with his BUT in my experience, I have never had a problem with a reg set up by ST. Also, my local diving is all fairly shallow so no problem on the first dive. If you are going on a trip with the set, I would suggest the pool dive to check it out.

I would 1st make sure all fittings are "tight" just right. Hand tight plus a little pull with a wrench. Watch the 2nd stage in particular. I have seen them fall off. Check that the mouth piece is secure.
Put it on a bottle. Make sure it breaths. Hit the purge.Make sure there is no free flow. IP may need a adjustment. (I decided to strike the procedure for this. If you have a free flow, take to a reliable tech) Do a bubble check in the water. Check again for free flows. Hit the purge. Don't know if you have a BC or will be renting. Make sure you have an inflator hose.

It's always a great habit to double check all your gear before any dive, but I will tell you that regs sent out from us are checked before they leave, and in fact, on your invoice, you will see the test results for IP and crack pressure for you regulator system.

Hook it up & check it out as you said you were going to do, if all is well you should be good to go dive it. Scuba Toys should have checked it out to make sure it was working before they shipped it out to you. I did buy a reg from ST That would not quit free flowing into your mouth. (didn't check it before we we went diving the first time) I sent it back and I am waiting to hear back from them.
This is why I always will check all my gear at home before I head to dive again. |
