getting flathead VI couple q's

OKay, so I am pulling the trigger on a Zeagle Flathead 6 from ST. This will be my first reg. There is an option for din or yoke? any thoughts?
Also will any octo work with this unit, I like the mares brigade, but will get an envoy if that would work better. Any opinions?

It's a fine reg (I have four of them). Breathe very well. I've used them in 35F water (many times) with no problems. Haven't gotten them very deep (maybe 150', but with He in the mix, so WOB seemed the same as shallower).

Just for ease of service (e.g. a shop that services Zeagle, but not Mares, etc), I'd stick with one brand for all your regs. I've been happy with ZX seconds.

For a first or only reg, I wouldn't mix brands. Stick with either the envoy 2nd or the ZX 2nd. The reason is convenience with service. One brand - one stop for service. That said, most any 2nd would work provided the intermediate pressure is compatible.

As for yoke vs DIN, that is an easy question. Do you plan to own your own tanks and dive mostly with them. If so, go DIN. If you plan to rent mostly, go Yoke. You can always get a DIN/Yoke conversion later. I have a yoke conversion kit for zeagles (not the add-on, the real reg parts) just sitting at the moment as everything we own is DIN.

I agree with staying with the same brand as far as primary/octo goes....it just makes it easier to get them serviced.

As far as DIN vs Yoke...I would suggest getting the DIN and a yoke converter....this way you are adaptable. no matter what tank you have access to...you will be able to dive. Granted most of the rental shops will have yoke connections but I have seen a few that have Din valves on them as well.

I just order a couple myself to eventually be used with doubles. Definately stick with 1 brand.

Had them to over 150, no helium, winter waters...breathed like a champ. Like the others said, I'd stay with one brand if for no other reason than it makes servicing easier. I'm a big fan of DIN, but it depends on whether or not you rent tanks often, but you can always add the converter. Do you have your own tanks? The Flathead VI has that nice environmental seal on it as well...good for keeping crap out the inner workings.

We just got my neighbor one yesterday. I have a couple Flathead XPs(unsealed 1st stage). The one my neighbor got yesterday is VI and has a DIN connector, but came with the Yoke adapter. Very nice reg.
There are some comercial guys on the Gulf side of the state(FL) who use the same Flatheads to go to over 400ft(not a misprint, 400+).

Wouldn't surprise me. The Navy at one point had Flatheads as their top-rated on one of their top rated regs after testing...I think that was 4 or 5 years ago. We had a big blow-up, er discussion once upon a time here on the board about whose regs were on "the list" with the Navy, but that still holds as a good endorsement for the Flathead, IMHO.

Din to Yoke

Hi,
I have a DIN set-up for Flathead VI. I have talked with a few dive shops locally and they told me not to worry about it. When I need a tank let them know and they will just change out the valve for me so I can run DIN.
Just thought I would share this with everyone.

I have a Yoke conversion kit for the Zeagle flathead 6 (and most of the other zeagle regs) if anyone wants to be able to do the 'real' conversion from DIN to yoke.

I haven't used them in 3-4 years and likely never will. I'd take any reasonable offer.
