Backup mouthpiece

Okay, so I'm exploring the magical world of Backup Mouthpieces in order to find something that is inexpensive yet not cheaply constructed.

I went to one LDS, and bought a Sherwood mouthpiece, and really like it. Problem is this LDS is no longer dealing in Sherwood products, and happened to have one laying around. The other LDS didn't have anything like this.

So I bought an Aqualung comfo... (can't remember, the really short one), but I'm not sure if I'll like it or not.

I liked the longer bite on the Sherwood, and for $8 I wish the LDS would have had 2 or 3.

I've tried Trident replacements, but they're not constructed very well IMHO. I wasn't impressed with the tabs, as they were too soft.

What's a mouthpiece I might try, then? There are so many out there that it's hard to choose.

Primarily, at this point, I'm looking for something to put in my save-a-dive kit.

We carry the sherwood... and if it's just backup in an emergency... really anything will probably do.

I use one of the boil and bit SeaCure mouthpieces so I just removed my stock one, tossed it in the save a dive kit and put on the seacure. They never rip or break (in my experience) but the backup has been used for other folks, octo's etc.

I agree with Larry on this mouthpiece...I bought one and also use my original as a backup...I have close to 150 dives on it and it looks brand new. If you are a biter, then this mouthpiece is especially for you.

Actually - probably fine. And when the braces come off... just boil it again, and re-bite - and you're good to go!

Yeah, I kind of am a biter. That's why the Trident mouthpieces didn't last long. Well, that, and it probably got harder use since I was doing my Rescue course.

So the Sea Cure has a nice solid bite? It must be kind of like a football mouthpiece, then, since you can reboil and bite.

If you can bite thru a seacure mouthpiece, you could probably whop up on a pit bull.

Is your LP hose in the optimal position? If the placement of the hose pushes or pulls on your regulator during your dive you will have a tendency to bite down harder to keep it in place.

A couple months ago I reconfigured my gear and got my primary in the wrong port as a result it pulled slightly on my reg and I bit through my mouthpiece in just one dive.

You've seen my avatar, yes? You never know, I just may be able to do so.

Hey, finflippers, thanks for the heads up on the hose config. You know, I may check that out, especially since I don't wear my gear in the 'standard' way. I wear my tank higher up, so the valve is around the back of my head since it helps my buoyancy/trim. So it may be that the reg. hose length should be a couple of inches longer to compensate.

I could change that fairly simply, I do think, couldn't I? I'm diving an Aqualung Titan reg, so just get another lp hose which will accommodate the reg. And I saw on another thread where you can change the reg piece to the hose.

I shall check it out. Cheers!

A hose swap isnt complicated..If you search around here I think there is even a walkthru with pictures It doesnt hurt to cut the new hose length size you t in string prior to ordering to see about how long the hose would be and see if it would be appropriate for your rig!
