Thoughts on a Mares Abyss 22

Buying my first reg set up. Although I'm doing more and more ocean diving, I tend to do a lot of lake diving. I'm not into "extreme" diving and tend to stay within moderate depths (80' to 115') and rarely dive in water that is colder than 55-60 degrees.

I've been looking at the Mares Abyss 22 and the Aeris Atmos Pro but am open to suggestions. I really want something that is uncomplicated and will just let me enjoy the dive. I don't want to spend a fortune but I do want something that I can depend on.

All suggestions are appreciated.

The Mares 22 is an excellent reg. The other might be too.

Ditto, great no hassles reg and I've been using mine for close to 10 years. The MR22 Abyss has been around quite a while, with only a few enhancements made over the years. No need for levers and switches, just get in and go! Small, light, durable, easy to work on, great breather.

I have a Mares MR22 Abyss on my singles rig and have never had any issues with it. I use Apeks on my doubles rig and find them to be better breathing regs though. All have been failure free and provided many reliable dives.

I have an older Mare Abyss 22 with many dives on it. It was my first reg and I used it for years. Never had any problems at any depths within rec limits. Only changed to the Apeks I dive now because I got a great deal with the shop I DM for. I really consider it to be one of the best regs on the market and if I could get the same deals I can get with Apeks I would still be diving them.

I just bought the Mares Voltrex ST have on sale ($265).

Mares Voltrex with MR22 First Stage reviews and discounts, Mares

I havent tried it yet, but couldnt find any negative comment about it anywhere (and I looked everywhere). This is a very good option for you to consider.

That's a great deal!

I purchased the same reg from ST. For the money this is clearly one of the best deals out there. Sure, I miss the cool looking metal front on the regular abyss, but I don't miss it hundreds of dollars more.
I have been down to 130' with it and it performed flawlessly.

I have a Mares Abyss that's about 7-8 years old maybe more. Never had a problem with it and consider it one on the best regs I have ever dived.
