Mares Abyss 22 Question
I have been diving since I was 12 but actually was first certified in 1972. It has been a few years since I have been diving and am working my way back in. I just purchased a Mares Abyss 22 regulator. From what I remember the second stage hose comes from the right front LP output and the octo comes from the right rear LP output. The regulator I just bought (on ebay but new in box) has the second stage regulator hose coming from the right rear LP port. Did someone put this on wrong or is this a new way of doing things. I am not sure it would make a big difference either way but I was just curious. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I know both regs come from the right. My reg has two LP output connections on the right. One front and one rear. As I said normally the 2nd stage is connected to the right front and the octo the right rear but this came to me with the 2nd stage connected to the right rear. Just curious of people with the Mares Abyss 22 if their 2nd stage is connected to the right front or right rear???

Misread your post. At one point the Abyss came with one 1/2" LP port and the other three where 3/8". 3/8" is considered the standard but at one point many manufactures put a single 1/2" port on their 1st stages. The reasoning was the 1/2" would flow more air. This turned out to be more marketing then anything else. Yours may have this 1/2" port and the user just used the standard port for whatever reason. Maybe that's what hose size he had.
Really doesn't matter as far as operation. Hose routing is what really matters here. Is there a reg. connected to the right front port or just the back right post. I still don't fully understand your description. If just one reg. is it setup for a AIR II type octo. Is there an octo hooked up or just one reg. |

Yes, I guess you are right. It does look like a 1/2" connection to the right rear LP Port. The right front LP port appears to be 3/8". The second stage
appears to have the 1/2" connection and therefore connected to the Right rear port. Now that brings me to another question. I have an OTS full face mask with a second stage hose connection that is 3/8". if I choose to use that mask and reg do I need to get a 1/2" plug to plug up the port that is in use now by the Mares 2nd stage?? If so where do you buy such a plug? All this equipment has changed so much. Thanks! |

The rest of the story.
As for the octo that will apparently have to go on the right front port as the 1/2" connection is on the right rear port. In any case the octo and 2nd stage will both be coming off the right side. Like I said I doubt it matters whether the octo or 2nd stage is front or back as long as they are both on the right side. I would still like to know how to go about switching to my full face mask and plugging up the 1/2" port that is currently used for my reg??

Any decent dive shop should be able to come up with a 1/2 plug. You can also get a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter. Again your LDS should be able to get you one. If not give scubatoys a call.
BTW the Abyss is a great reg. I used to dive one all the time. Only changed when I got a great deal on some Apeks regs. Here's an adaptor. They can probably get you a plug also if you get stuck.
