reg question

I am a strictly warm water diver. I only dive on vacation in tropical waters. I have not dove for about 4 years. I did do 2 dives in Playa del Carmen this summer and I have to admit I see why people have refresher course. I am a divemaster with over 200 saltwater dives and when I hit the water on my first dive I felt like a noob. Second dive was like riding a bike.

That is not the point I am trying to make though. I have mares rebel regs that I bought in Germany about 7 years ago they have about 30 dives on them. I have started buying some new gear since my BC was crap I got a Reef Rider on sale here at ST and a comp since I never had one. I am noticing I can get a reg here for about $200sh the services on my regs are $65 min if no parts are needed, I have looked up the Rebel and what I am reading it seems to be a low end reg. I am wondering if I should just upgrade and salvage the the oct and other stuff.

So thats the scenario here is the questions. Since I am a warm water diver only does it make sense to save on gear for this reason. Would it make sense to upgrade the Rebel to another reg in the $200 price range or just get it serviced?

A really good breathing reg is a wonderful thing! I have a SP M25 S600 that is my fav. But also have Zeagle flat head and d50 that are great breathers as well. You can read review on Scuba Diving Mag .com . Take note of the models that appeal to you, then search and find a super price on last years model etc. St has some great prices, I think there is a slightly used Flat head up now for $375?? Again it is not the current model but great reg. You can also buy used and have it serviced, 1) know what brand/model you are looking for 2) find one with little sign of wear few scratches 3)You dont want currosion or pitting (look close) 4) Have it serviced and you are good to go. 5) $100-200 for the reg and octo is good pricing, plus whatever service costs. 6) Feel free to make offers on used stuff, sellers are often flexible, especially now.

You build a pretty good argument for buying new regs. Purchasing new regs that include free parts for life might pay. I dive cold water so I needed higher end regs. If you like the way your reg works for the diving you do then get it serviced. If you need someone to coach you into buying new gear, I'm there for you...

If your reg is doing it's job, why change it? Obviously, a higher end easier breathing reg is nice... But it's not necessary...

If you just want reliable gear that works... keep your reg...

If you want the most enjoyable underwater experience or enjoy having fancy equipment, go for an upgrade! Be honnest with yourself about what you really want, then go for it! 200$ can be put towards a nice dive trip...
