I'd also personally go with the Titan, but depending on your budget, and the type of diving you'll be doing, the Calypso might be fine. True it's unbalanced, but unless you plan on going really deep, the Calypso will be fine. Plus if you decide to get a pony bottle down the road, it would be perfect for that use.
FWIW, I've been to 120 on an unbalanced Calypso (my 1st reg), and I really don't remember thinking I was working hard to breath. Now, I'm not suggesting you buy the Calypso over the Titan. In fact unless money is an issue, I'd go with the Titan for all the reasons everyone else has mentioned. But the Calypso isn't a reg I'd be afraid to use.

The Calypso, like the similar Scubapro Mark 2, is extremely reliable. It has an unbalanced piston first stage with a simple downstream second, and is fine for most recreational diving. Personally, I prefer the Titan LX (as opposed to the plain Titan, which also has a simple downstream second), since it has the Titan's balanced diaphragm first stage coupled with a pneumatically balanced second stage. The Titan first stage is one of the best designs ever. I don't think the current Calypso is as good as the previous Calypso design. I own all three. I have personally had the Titan to below 300 ft on commercial dives. Very reliable design.

I bought a Calypso for pool work (working for an AquaLung shop at the time, and didn't want to spend more than I had to).
It gets the job done, but there is a HUGE difference comparing it to my other regs (ScubaPro MK25/S600 and Atomic M1/Z2). If I had to do it over again, I'd probably try the Titan next round. |
