I never said this.
I said the Mares regs, IF properly tuned, breathe flawlessly at any Rec depth. That's what I said and it is the truth (I can vouch for it and so can many others). Please don't misinterpret what I said or read more into it than what is there. And yes, this without a lever! My reg, which is a mid-low end V16 Proton breathes very very well at all rec depths I've brought it to (yes, I've been down to the 40m with it) and just as well in river diving (I dive the St.Lawrence) without freeflowing. I've been in some nasty currents with it and it never freeflowed on me. I honnestly feel it breathes as well as the Apeks 50s I used to do my Tech classes (although maybe if I was more used to playing with the lever, I would have found the Apeks better... who knows... )This said, lots of people have brought up good advice and clear explanations to their preferences! I hope reading through all this this helps the OP find what he prefers!
This would be the statement that makes me laugh. To be honest, I would agree that either reg would be a good choice, but the argument that the mares regs are "properly tuned" so they don't "need" an adjustment knob is silly.
I just sent an email to Larry but I had to call too cause I couldn't wait for the answer to the email. I am going to get the Flat head 6. Tekdiver sent me to a LDS to look at the apecs xtx 100 which I really liked to be honest and the owner made a great pitch. Looking at both regs though they seem very close. I also found a dive shop that will service them. The LDS was really nice and I plan to take a nitrox course this winter with them.

Congrats on your choice! I'm sure you'll be happy with that reg for a long long time!

I have a zeagle BC and Mares Abyss 42 regs....If I had to do it all over again I would stick with a zeagle BC and Mares regs. Works for me, from the surface to 138 feet I never thought about if my reg was breathing different, perhaps I just am not sensitive enough to notice it...however it did get rid of dry mouth for me and I like have less things to tinker with while underwater. About half of my regs time has been between 80-130 and it really performs the same....just my experience....

Although I don't have any experience with Zeagle regs, I do own one of their BC's (Brigade) and their quality is top-notch. I use Mares regs for a few of reasons.
1. They breathe well at any depth without adjustments (no lever). I've never felt like I needed to make any adjustments while diving and I prefer not having an adjustment plus the extra peace of mind of a simpler design (no extra parts for the adjustment function). 2. They are proven reliable in cold water (I live in Finland). 3. They are easy to get serviced in many parts of the world. Zeagle seems to have good coverage in the US but not in Europe. I do believe Zeagle make some good regs and I considered a Flathead VI at my last purchase. But in the end it came down to worldwide service availability plus local service and Mares beat them on that for me.
