Reg servicing

How often do most people have their regs serviced? It should be done every year based on being conservative for safety, but do most poeple stick to that?

They need to be serviced when they start breathing badly. I know a guy who services his every 7 years or so. As long as you don't slam the HP seat you really never have to get them serviced.

I don't know about every year, but definately don't wait until they are "breathing badly" Asking for trouble and faliure at depth.
I think a total free flow at depth will empty an Alum 80 in less then 30seconds. If you are not near your buddy you can die.

Interval between service depends on a lot of things like how often you dive, salt or fresh water, how you care for the regs, where you store them, and sometimes just the luck of the draw.

I do mine when they need it or when it seems like it has been a while. That probably sounds odd, but I keep a pretty good eye on things and try to spot problems before they develop. Not everyone cares to put that kind of effort into it.

The last 'problem' I had was 1st stage creep. I found it before I noticed any change in performance (IP gauge). Get this...it was only 4 months and about 30 dives since the last service at an authorized dealer. If I had not noticed the problem, it probably would have caused some freeflows before the 1yr service interval was up.

I don't think that is all that bad an idea as long as the idea of breathing badly includes a drop in performance and leaking (including slight free flow). I would prefer adding an IP gauge check to catch incipient problems but a reg can perform adequately for a long time with a little IP creep not resulting in freeflow. And many problems could be managed and unnecessary services avoided if divers would learn to make simple 2nd stage adjustments. I expect to get 3 to 5 years out of a full service. I dive a number of regs so that is probably close to 100 dives on a specific reg.

But if you are going to push your regs like that, it would be a good idea to add a backup regulator to your save a dive kit.

I really don't see how such an approach is asking for trouble or having a serious "failure at depth" any more likely.

I get mine serviced every year.
It's cheap insurance and that way parts are free too

It's not insurance at all, especially given the fact that most reg problems occur right after servicing.
