I think most of the chlorine problems have to do with the o-rings. It eats up rubber if it's exposed too long. But as long as you rinse your gear, I doubt you'll have to worry about it between service. That is unless your an instructor. But if you're an instructor you know this already.

No, not an instructor, and I didn't know all these, so thanks.
Just that I'll be doing a few practice sessions in the pools soon, I'm wondering if I should bring my own regs or use the rental ones. Guess I'll just get the rentals, less hassle... Sure, I'll rinse their regs |

This is a little off topic (sorry!) but the topic reminds me off when I was about to do my AOW course. I made a comment to the LDS owner that I hated swimming laps as I wasn't very good. Well, that was his queue to tell me that as part of the AOW course I was required to do laps (I didn't - he was just having me on). Anyway, I thought I best go swim some laps as it has been YEARS since I have done that. I wore contacts in the pool and about 10 min after getting out my eyes were sore, I ended up in agony for an unknown reason. I thought I'd had a reaction to the chlorine. I ended up at the optomitrist and as it turned out, the chlorine had gotten in behind my contacts and rubbed the surface off my corneas. Ouch!!! 24 hours later they were fine. I won't be doing that again!! Chlorine + contacts= bad.

I asked the question re: BC's etc in the pool, and the instructor commented on the fact that there are BC's/Regs that have been in the pool hundreds of times.
<DIV>It's all about the cleaning/maitnence, rinse the BC/Reg afterwards, and you should be good.</DIV> <DIV>The chlorine will have a greater affect on clear silicone stuff like masks/snorkels, they will start to yellow quicker in the pool etc.</DIV> <DIV></DIV> |

I have spent a lot of time in pools although most without scuba gear. Chlorine will effect the clear skirt of a mask by turning it yellowish. Also on the BC I have used in the pool they are some sections that are fading. Such as the wing and webbing for the weight pockets and tank bands but not the shoulder straps. Must be how they are made and the color dyed into them. The wetsuit I wear in the pool also shows fading but it's pretty old.
I just rinse my stuff off with water. Sodium Thiosulfate is the active chemical that removes chlorine. </span> |
