Atomic z1
Has anyone used the Atomic Z1?
If a used Atomic Z1, was taken care, would it still be better than New regulator in the $200.00 to $400.00 range? Edit: The Z1 has been replaced with the Z2 now: Atomic Z2 Regulator reviews and discounts, Atomic Last edited by ScubaToys Larry : 12-07-2008 at 03:13 PM. |

Atomic makes a great reg, no arguments there. However, I don't believe they are "better" than other regs on the market necessarily.
When my husband was looking for new regs, he was leaning heavily toward the Atomic Z1, but finally went with a Zeagle Flathead/Envoy combination. Why? Well, although service on the Atomic is only required every 2 years to maintain the warranty, they don't provide free parts and are more expensive to service. The Zeagles provide free parts, and in ScubaLab testing have tested just as well as the Atomics (the Envoy has nearly a perfect score). Another factor in his decision was the excellent service and responsiveness I've gotten from both ScottZeagle and ScubaToys with all of my Zeagle stuff (BC and regs). Ultimately if you choose the Atomics, you should feel confident that you are buying an excellent regulator from an excellent company. But only you can make the determination whether or not you think it's "better" than other choices you might have.

You can get a new Z2 in the $400 range (MSRP is ~$420 I think, 10% off, maybe more if you ask nicely).
If you buy a Z1 for $250 and get it serviced, you are approaching the price of a new Z2. Z1 is a good reg, look for one that has the 'jet seat piston' upgrade. The earlier versions had slight problems with high tank pressures (creep). The Z2 is a lot of reg for the money. Rich |
